Who are IOSH?

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) is the Chartered body for health and safety professionals. IOSH was founded in 1945 and is a registered charity. With more than 38,000 individual members, it states it’s the biggest professional health and safety organisation in the world.

IOSH Working safely 1 Day course for staff

IOSH Managing safely 4 or 5 day course for managers

Neither of these courses are qualification (not on the Curriculum framework) hence no levels.

They are awareness only (certificated and accredited by IOSH). These courses do cover the requirements for staff working or managing health and safety in the workplace.

But they can be expensive for something that is not a qualification.

Who are NEBOSH

NEBOSH (The National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) was formed in 1979 as an independent examining board and awarding body with charitable status.  They offer a comprehensive range of globally-recognised, vocationally-related qualifications designed to meet the health, safety, environmental and risk management needs of all places of work in both the private and public sectors.

Courses leading to NEBOSH qualifications attract around 30,000 candidates annually and are offered by over 400 course providers in 80 countries around the world.  Their qualifications are recognised by the relevant professional membership bodies including the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) and the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA).

NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety 5 or 6 days (36hrs tuition time +21hrs home study)

NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety (243hrs tuition time +225hrs home study)

These NEBOSH courses are qualifications on the Curriculum framework and are widely taken as a first step towards a career in health and safety and are accepted by IOSH – the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health – in meeting the academic requirements for Membership.

NEBOSH courses are seen as the highest qualifications’ for professional working in Health & Safety but are also the longest and the most expensive.
